This list is about the best productivity software for Linux. We’ll do our best to make sure you understand this list of the best productivity software for Linux. I hope you like this list Best Productivity Software for Linux. So let’s start:

Table of Contents: Best Productivity Software for Linux

Productivity software is a category of application programs that help users create documents, databases, charts, spreadsheets, and presentations. Many productivity apps are designed for business use. Examples of office productivity software include word processors, database management systems (DBMS), graphics software, and spreadsheets. The definition of productivity software is sometimes broadened to include any type of application that helps people do their jobs, including collaboration and communication programs. Employee productivity (sometimes called labor productivity) is an assessment of the effectiveness of an employee or a group of employees.

Productivity software increases this efficiency by making it easier for employees to do their jobs. Using a word processing application such as Microsoft Word to create digital files makes creating, editing, storing, and sharing documents much more efficient. Distractions can take up a lot of your time when it comes to working, doing chores, or studying. This leads to being distracted from other activities and can end up being frustrating. However, there are a variety of methods to improve productivity, as well as apps to help you do so. By completing your tasks more efficiently, you will not only find that you will be able to accomplish much more with less effort, but you will also have more time for leisure and relaxation.

Do you like to work in silence? Some people do, some don’t. Many find it easier to concentrate when there is some background noise. Going to a library or a coffee shop isn’t always an option, but with Blanket you can simulate that feeling.

Blanket is an ambient noise app that includes different types of background noise that you can mix and match so you don’t have to open your browser or music app to find a quiet, distraction-free playlist. That’s great, because opening a browser when you don’t need it is one of the easiest ways to lose track of what’s going on.

hubstaff

Hubstaff is an easy-to-use Linux time tracker that uses a desktop app to track time. Users simply select the project they are working on and start the timer.

The app then records various information, takes random screenshots (an option that can be customized or disabled), tracks activity (based on keyboard and mouse usage) as well as apps used and Visited URLs.

With Jira, there are plenty of ways to stay up to date. Whether you prefer to receive updates via email, chat, or your mobile device, Jira gives you all the options. Whether at your desk or on the go with the new mobile interface, Jira helps your team get the job done. Problems are everywhere: tasks, ideas, and requests lurk in documents, in employees’ minds, and deep in their inboxes. Use Jira to capture and organize your team’s issues, prioritize and take important actions, and stay up to date on what’s happening around you.

Jira makes it all easy, so your team can spend less time managing work and more time building great software. Work the way you want: Your process is at the heart of your work. Don’t force your team’s work into the default workflow defined by your project tracker. Jira provides workflows that align with your existing processes and that you can easily adapt as your team evolves. Use the tool that matches your equipment, do not modify your equipment to fit your tool.

Notes above

Notes-Up’s look and feel is reminiscent of note-taking tools like Standard Notes, Simplenote, and the macOS Notes app. If you use one of these programs, switching to Notes-Up will be easy and straightforward. Either way, Notes-Up is easy to learn and use. If your Markdown skills are rusty, you can click toolbar buttons to add formatting like lists, bold, italics and strikethrough, code blocks, images, and more.

You can also export your notes as PDF or Markdown files. If you use Notes-Up for a while, you will have a long list of notes. Organize them using notebooks. For example, you can create personal, school, and work notebooks. Also, you can create sub-notebooks with Notes-Up.

Last pass

Everyone knows the pain of forgetting a password. Those who prefer not to use the same password for all services will certainly appreciate LastPass. It works in your browser and helps you manage passwords easily and securely, and stop wasting time trying to remember them all.

It also helps to create strong and easy to read passwords. The tool is available for Linux platforms as a universal installer and as a plug-in for some web browsers.

F.lux is a small but very useful app – it dims screens to a warmer color temperature at night. It’s easy on the eyes and keeps you from being awake at 2am because your screens are so bright. There are Mac and Windows versions, but only a command-line application for Linux. F.lux for Ubuntu is an indicator applet (like the new mail menu), so it works great on Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. Michael has improved the command line application by leaps and bounds.

There are a number of new configuration options (all available in the GUI), the night/day cycle is now much more accurate and even takes daylight saving time into account. The F.lux Meter applet automatically manages your screen’s color temperature based on your latitude and longitude or, if you’re in the United States, your zip code. In the settings window, you can set your favorite night color temperature and preview it, as well as the current color temperature.

osmos

Osmo is a handy personal organizer for Linux. The list of features includes calendar, task management, address book and notes. Osmo offers a wide range of features, but it’s very easy to use and set up. In our opinion, Osmo is in many ways as good as, if not better than, the personal organization app GNOME Getting Things.

It’s said to be easy to use and configurable to suit user preferences, and it works especially well on smaller monitors. The user interface is clean and compact. Osmo is a GTK+ based tool that uses a simple XML database to store all personal data.

Kexi

Kexi is an integrated data management application. It can be used to create databases, insert data, perform queries and process data. Forms can be created to provide a custom interface for your data. All tables, queries, and forms of database objects are stored in the database, making it easy to share and design data. Kexi is part of the KOffice productivity suite for the K-Desktop environment.

Kexi is considered a long-awaited open source competitor to Microsoft Access, FileMaker, and Oracle Forms. The development of Kexi is driven by the lack of rapid application development (RAD) tools for database systems that are sufficiently powerful, inexpensive, based on open standards, and portable across many operating systems and platforms. -material forms.

break timer

Break Timer tracks the time you spend working on the computer. It’s designed to help you take breaks and practice healthier behavior while you work. The application uses two types of breaks: micro-breaks and full breaks. The former are designed to help you relax your eyes and wrists, while the latter are more focused on your mind and body as a whole.

The great thing about Break Timer is that it’s extremely easy to use. Once installed, you can simply adopt the default pause time or create a new one (which best suits your needs and style).

harbor master is a free, open-source cross-platform network activity monitor available in an early version for Windows and Ubuntu and Fedora Linux distributions.

Portmaster combines traditional network activity monitoring with additional features, such as the ability to enforce the use of secure DNS or automatic blocking of advertising, trackers and malicious hosts using filter lists, which are commonly used by ad blockers.

Portmaster is free to use, which usually leads to wondering how the development is funded. The developers behind Portmaster reveal information about it on the project’s official website. Basically what they plan to do is use a freemium model. Portmaster will be free for all users but additional services, a VPN is specifically mentioned, are available to users who sign up for them. Money is earned from this, which is used to fund development.

Harbor Master: First Look

port master connection details

An alpha version of Portmaster is available for Windows and Linux. It is released for testing and development purposes at the time. Alpha software may contain bugs and problems and should not be installed on production machines.

The development team notes that the alpha tag is “more about missing features than instability” of the app. Features planned for the first beta include import and export options, support for custom filter lists, crypto-signed updates, and full device network monitor.

Installation is simple under Windows; a reboot is required to complete the installation process. The interface is well designed and modern. The main page lists recent network activity, including the total number of connections and the percentage of connections allowed and blocked.

Clicking on an app or service in the network activity list displays details, including name and path, and information about every connection that has been made in the past.

Each connection is listed with the target, whether the data was encrypted, the IP addresses and the countries of the IP addresses.

Parameters can be set for each individual application. Besides blocking all network activity, users can change several connection-specific options. To name a few:

  • Switch between default network actions: allow, block, invite.
  • Block Internet or LAN connectivity.
  • Block P2P/direct connections
  • Block incoming connections.
  • Configure outbound rules.
  • Apply filter lists, e.g. ad and tracker blocking, malware hosts

All of these can be set globally, so preferences apply by default to all apps and services. Override options are available for individual applications.

The All Apps section lists all apps with current and past network activity. A search function is available to quickly find applications in the list. You can select any app or service to change the default network behavior.

The premium SPN feature, Safing Privacy Network, is also included in alpha. The service is inspired by Tor, as it routes connections through multiple network hops for better privacy. The main difference with VPNs is the multi-hop architecture. Some VPNs, NordVPN for example, also support multiple connections, but these are generally not designed to hide information such as destination from each other.

Closing words

Portmaster is a promising network monitor: it is free, open source and available for different platforms. Windows and Linux versions are available, and a Mac version is planned for the future. The interface is well designed and although some features are missing, it is already functional.

It’s too early to tell how it will compare to other network monitors and firewalls such as Glasswire, Windows Firewall Control or SimpleWall.

Now you: are you using a third-party network monitor or firewall?

Google announced the release of Flutter 3 as part of its Google I/O keynote. Google Flutter 3 completes its roadmap from a mobile-centric framework to a cross-platform framework. It supports macOS and Linux desktop apps. Additionally, it improves Firebase integration, brings new productivity and performance features, and also supports Apple Silicon.

Google Flutter 3 – the roadmap

Google created Flutter to revolutionize app development: combining the web’s iterative development model with hardware-accelerated graphics rendering and pixel-level control previously only possible with games. In the four years since the release of Flutter 1.0 Beta, Google has steadily grown on this foundation. The company has added new framework functions and widgets, deeper integration with the underlying platform, and a rich library of packages. Many performance and tooling improvements have also been made.

As a maturing product, this product now has more and more applications under its belt. Today, over 500,000 apps are published using Flutter. Analysis from research companies like data.ai, as well as public opinion, shows that Flutter is used by customers in many niches. Its usage scenarios range from social apps like WeChat, to finance and banking apps like Betterment and Nubank, to business apps like SHEIN and trip.com, to lifestyle apps like Fastic, Tabcorp and My BMW. From companion apps to official apps from public institutions like the Brazilian government, etc., Flutter shines.

Google Flutter 3

Welcome to Flutter 3

At this point, Flutter’s cross-platform journey has reached a new climax. With Google Flutter 3, you can build beautiful experiences for 6 platforms with just one code base. It offers developers unparalleled productivity and empowers startup teams to bring new ideas to a fully usable market from day one.

In previous versions, Google adds support for web and Windows platforms in addition to iOS and Android platforms. Now, Google Flutter 3 adds stable support for macOS and Linux apps. Adding platform support requires more than just rendering pixels: it also includes support for new input and interaction models, support for compiling and build, accessibility and internationalization support, and platform-specific integration. Google’s goal is to give you the flexibility to take full advantage of the underlying operating system while sharing as much user interface and logic as you want.

On macOS, Google has dedicated resources to support Intel and Apple Silicon and provides Universal Binary support. This allows applications to be bundled into executables that run natively on both architectures. On Linux, Canonical and Google have teamed up to give developers the best possible development tools with high integration.

Create universal macOS binaries

Superlist is a great example of how Flutter can help you get a great desktop experience, and it’s available in beta today for everyone to experience. Superlist offers powerful collaboration features, bringing together lists, tasks, and free-form content in an all-new app that gives things like tasks and personal planning a fresh new look. The Superlist team chose Flutter for its ability to provide a fast and highly personalized desktop experience. Google believes its progress so far shows that this is a very smart move.

Superlist

Google Flutter 3 also brings improvements to many essentials, improving performance, improving support for Material You, and further improving productivity.

In addition to what was mentioned above, Flutter fully supports native development on Apple Silicon. While Flutter has been compatible with M1-powered Apple devices since the inception of the M1 processor, Flutter now takes full advantage of Dart support for Apple Silicon. It allows for faster compilation on M1-powered devices and support for macOS apps.

Mac computers using Apple Silicon

In this release, Google’s Material Design 3 support is nearing completion. Developers can now take full advantage of this responsive cross-platform design system, including its dynamic color schemes and updated visual components.

Material Design 3

Google will also soon publish a more detailed technical article, in which this part is explained. In the release, the company will also explain many other new features of Google Flutter 3.

Flutter is powered by Dart, a highly productive portable language for cross-platform development. Google’s improvements to Dart this release cycle include new language features that help reduce model code and improve readability, experimental support for RISC-V, improved linter, and a new documentation.

Firebase and Flutter

Of course, there is more to building apps than just building UI frameworks. Application publishers need a comprehensive set of tools to help them build, publish, and operate their applications. This includes services such as authentication, data storage, cloud features, and device testing. Several services currently support Flutter, including Sentry, AppWrite, and AWS Amplify.

Google’s application service is Firebase. SlashData’s Developer Benchmark study shows that 62% of Flutter developers use Firebase in their apps. So, over the past few releases, Google has worked with Firebase to expand and improve the integration between the two. The company also wants to make it the go-to integration service for Flutter. This includes upgrading Flutter’s Firebase plugin to version 1.0, adding better documentation and tools, and providing new widgets like FlutterFireUI.

Google officially confirms that the Flutter/Firebase integration is now part of the core Firebase product. The company has also moved source code and documentation to the main Firebase repository and website. Firebase support for Flutter will evolve alongside support for Android and iOS.

Additionally, the company includes major improvements to support Flutter apps using Crashlytics (the popular real-time crash reporting service in Firebase). With the latest Flutter Crashlytics plugin, you can track fatal errors in real time. Interestingly, this tracking is possible using the same feature set as iOS and Android developers. These include important alerts and metrics such as “free users crashing” to help you maintain your app’s stability. The Crashlytics analytics pipeline has also been upgraded to improve handling of Flutter crash aggregation. This speeds up filing, prioritization, and problem solving. Finally, the plugin configuration process is now very simple. So you can configure and use Crashlytics directly from your Dart code in just a few steps.

Flutter Casual Game Kit

For most developers, Flutter is an application framework. However, with Flutter’s hardware graphics acceleration support, its application is growing. Additionally, open source game engines like Flame and the community around casual game development are also growing. Google wants to make it easier for casual game developers to start their projects. So, during the I/O conference, Google released the Casual Game Toolkit. This provides templates, a best practices starter kit, and referral credits available for advertising and cloud services.

The truth is that Flutters is not originally intended to create high-intensity 3D action games. However, some of these games have started using Flutter in the UI part of the game scene. Currently, PUBG Mobile which has hundreds of millions of users is using Flutter. Google wants to see how far it could push the technology, so it has a fun pinball game that uses Firebase and Flutter web support. The I/O Pinball game features a custom table around four of Google’s most popular mascots: Flutter’s Dash, Firebase’s Sparky, Android Robot and Chrome Dinosaur. These you can find in this game and compete with others. Google wants to showcase the versatility of Flutter in this fun way.

If you are in the Apple ecosystem, you’re probably familiar with Handoff, a feature that lets you seamlessly switch tasks between devices. For example, you started reading an article on your Mac, but after a few minutes you decide to read it on your iPad. After simply unlocking the tablet, you’ll be greeted by a small icon, allowing you to open the web page and continue where you left off. . Nearby Sharing works quickly and efficiently, as does AirDrop. And a Link to Windows app lets you sync information, notifications and files from the phone to your laptop – much like iPhones and MacBooks bounce off each other.

But there is still work to be done to improve this “ecosystem” experience, and Google seems to focus a lot of effort on this!

At this year’s Google Annual Developer Conference, also known as Google I/O, the tech giant, has introduced a few new ways that could give us just that: a quick and easy transition between devices that talk to each other and share a common task.

Android 13 will let you copy and paste across your Android devices

A new feature in Android 13 will allow users to copy and paste across all their connected devices, similar to Apple’s Universal Clipboard. This means you’ll be able to copy a text from your phone, tap a quick near share pop-up, and then paste it on your other device as you normally would.

This could be a really cool feature, because right now you need to find a way to send what’s on your clipboard via a message to your other device, copy it again, and then paste it. While this new solution is still a step up from Apple’s continuity, it’s still much better for the overall Android UX where multiple devices are involved.

A new set of APIs for a seamless cross-device experience

The ad further broad outlines a new set of APIs that will help developers build apps that do more than just copy and paste text from one device to another.

For example, while driving, you can share a location on the map directly with your friend’s car. Also, if you want to rent or buy a movie on your TV, you can use your phone to enter your payment method. Or, if multiple people are ordering takeout, you can have all of your guests simply open the specific delivery app on their phone and send their orders to your shopping cart.

Google said it intends to support cross-platform development for Chrome OS, iOS, Windows, and other platforms as well, so these features won’t be limited to Android only.

To create these APIs, Google took the methods used by Nearby Sharing to discover and authorize devices and gave them “additional capabilities” to allow developers to use them and build apps that “easily join devices in a shared experience while preserving user privacy”.

These APIs will first be available through Google Play Services, and we can expect a first preview to be released in Q2 2022.

If you often copy text between your Android device and your PC, you know that the process is not easy. Android and Windows aren’t tightly integrated, so they often lack built-in cross-platform features like a universal clipboard. A universal clipboard makes it easy to copy and paste between two devices, without the need for third-party email, notepad, or messaging apps.

You can find hundreds of universal clipboard (or cloud clipboard) apps on the Google Play Store. But most of them are either too complicated to set up or too limited in their functionality, including paid ones. Some only work in the desktop browser, and some don’t sync automatically when text is copied.

Instead, we’ll be using free Microsoft products to configure our feature-rich Universal Clipboard between Android and Windows. Windows 10 and Android Swiftkey sync support was announced in 2021. It seamlessly syncs the latest text copied to the cloud and pushes it to your Android keyboard. Microsoft also encrypts clipboard data for better privacy and security, and it is not stored or processed on their servers (via SwiftKey).

How to set up a universal keyboard between your Android and your PC

You’ll need three things to get started: a Microsoft account, the Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard for Android, and Windows 10 (at least October 2018 release) or higher.

First, let’s configure Windows for cloud clipboard.

  1. Create a new Microsoft account. Or log in if you already have one. Open the Settings app (with the search bar or start menu) and click Connect in the top left.

  2. Next, navigate to System > Clipboard in the Settings app.

  3. Toggle the “Clipboard History” and “Sync Across Devices” switches.

  4. Windows also lets you choose between automatic sync and manual sync options. Automatic synchronization sends the copied text directly to the Android clipboard. Otherwise, you’ll need to launch the Windows Clipboard app (Win key + V) and choose the clip data you want to sync (via SwiftKey Support).

The configuration for Android is similar.

  1. Install Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard from Google Play Store.

  2. When prompted, make Microsoft SwiftKey the default input method.

  3. Sign in to your Microsoft account (Google accounts do not support cloud clipboard).

  4. To enable clip synchronization, navigate to Rich Entry > Clipboard.

  5. Flip the sync keyboard history toggle. Your Windows and Swiftkey clipboards will now be in sync.

  6. You can also enable the “Show last copy as a quick paste option on the prediction bar” feature for convenient pasting.

  • Many studios merge around 45 days, but movies can have shorter or longer windows.

During its exclusive 45-day theatrical window, “The Batman” grossed $760 million at the worldwide box office, of which nearly $370 million came from the United States.

It was Warner Bros.’ first film. in over a year of exclusively releasing in theaters after the studio launched all of its 2021 films simultaneously on the

.

While “The Batman” now airs on Max, the change is representative of other major Hollywood studios, which seem to be largely moving away from “day and date” releases as they are called, in favor of exclusive, but theatrical windows. shortened.

Theater industry leaders are influencing studio executives by showing that an exclusive window can help build momentum for an eventual streaming release.

“The exclusive window is in the interest not only of exhibitors but of studios as well,” Mooky Greidinger, CEO of movie theater chain Cineworld, told Insider. “The more successful a film is in theaters, the bigger it is in ancillary markets.”

Theater executives say top studio executives have reassured them of their commitment to the theatrical experience — including those new to the industry, such as David Zaslav, the CEO of the new Warner Bros. Discovery, and Brian Robbins, who became head of Paramount Pictures last year.

“The energy and enthusiasm that David Zaslav brings to Warner Bros. and his enthusiasm for the business shows that theater is an important mechanism,” said Rolando Rodriguez, CEO of Marcus Theaters and President of the National Association of theater owners (NATO). “We heard similar comments from Brian.”

During a speech at last month’s CinemaCon exhibitor conference — where studios showcase their upcoming movies to theater owners — NATO CEO John Fithian went so far as to state that the day and the date were “dead as a serious business model”. “

The model is not totally dead; Universal is releasing the Stephen King adaptation “Firestarter” simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock on Friday. Theater industry leaders accept that studios have had to release some films this way during the pandemic and may continue to do so. But they don’t see it as a viable long-term strategy.

“That’s not to say there won’t be distributors who occasionally play around with this concept,” Fithian later told Insider. “But from what we’re hearing from the studios, they’re focusing on their slate of movies for theaters with an exclusive window.”

Exclusive cinema windows shorten to accommodate streaming premieres

The typical theatrical window before the pandemic was 75-90 days, which meant a movie would only be shown in theaters during that time before heading to home entertainment. Now, as studios recommit to exclusive theatrical releases, the pandemic has led to a shortened window followed by a streaming premiere, as media companies also seek to expand their direct-to-consumer businesses.

Paramount’s “The Lost City,” for example, debuted on Paramount+ on Tuesday, 45 days after its theatrical release.

Yet streaming is a taboo subject in the theater industry. Studio presentations at CinemaCon were careful not to mention their streaming components.

When Warner Bros.’ chairman Toby Emmerich boasted it was the only studio to regularly release movies theatrically last year, applause cut off; it was also the only studio to release all of its films day-to-day with a streaming service.

Presentations instead focused on box office results.

“The Lost City” grossed $95 million in the United States and $163 million worldwide, an impressive amount for an original comedy in a market dominated by superhero franchises. And “The Batman” was closing in on $800 million worldwide before it became available to stream.

But industry leaders Insider spoke to at CinemaCon said that while a new standard is emerging for movie theater windows, they’re no longer set in stone. Some movies may have longer or shorter windows than others.

“I don’t know if there will be a standard window for every content provider,” said Jim Orr, president of national distribution at Universal. “It seems to merge for about 45 days, but that’s not safe either. Nothing will be as set in stone as it was in the past.”

Below is the current theatrical distribution strategy of each major Hollywood studio:

It’s been a long time since Windows had a feature called kiosk mode, which turns an ordinary device into a single-use device that can only run one app. So, today we are going to show you how to set up kiosk mode in Windows 11.

The most common application of this feature is setting up an Internet-accessible computer as a kiosk that guests can use to access the Internet. Or fill out an application and convert an existing device into an interactive digital sign to demonstrate a product or promote a business to customers.

Follow along as we show you how to enable and disable kiosk mode in Windows 11, right after seeing in more detail what it is and how it works.

What is Windows Kiosk Mode?

Windows lets you create fixed-use devices like ATMs. Or point-of-sale terminals, medical devices, digital signs and kiosks using the Microsoft Azure platform.

By using Kiosk mode on these fixed-use devices, you can provide a dedicated, locked down user experience to your customers.

In order to provide a more secure environment for public or specialized use, Windows offers a number of locked experiences. Including assigned access single app kiosks, assigned access multi-app kiosks and shell launchers.

Expert tip: Some PC issues are hard to fix, especially when it comes to corrupt repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having trouble fixing an error, your system may be partially damaged. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify the problem.
Click here to download and start repairing.

Depending on the kiosk configuration, an assigned access or a shell launcher is used. Based on your answers to the following questions, you can choose from a variety of different kiosk setup approaches.

Alternatively, if you want only one program to run on your kiosk and everyone can see or use it, consider an assigned-access single-app kiosk that runs either a Universal Windows Platform app ( UWP), or a Windows desktop application.

Keep reading our Windows 11 Kiosk Mode guide to learn how to turn it on and off whenever you want.

How do I enable and disable kiosk mode in Windows 11?

1. Enable it from Settings

  1. Hold the Windows + I to open the Settings the app and go to Accounts followed by Family and other users.account0family windows 11 kiosk mode
  2. Under the Set up a booth select the section Begin button.get-kiosk windows 11 kiosk mode
  3. Enter the name of the kiosk then click on Following.next-name windows 11 kiosk mode
  4. Select the application you want to use in Kiosk mode and click on Following and continue with the configuration settings.
  5. After completing the steps, log out of the main account and then log in with the Kiosk account to enter the mode.

By using the CTRL + ALT + OF THE hotkey will bring up a menu of alternatives for exiting the session. For example, shutting down the computer, restarting the device, or logging in with another account.

Note that there is no Windows 11 kiosk mode for multiple apps, as the feature is only available in Windows 10. If you need to use kiosk mode for multiple apps, learn how to switch back to Windows 10.

2. Disable it with your administrator account

  1. Hurry the Windows + I to access Settings and access Accounts followed by Family and other users.account0family windows 11 kiosk mode
  2. Under the Set up a booth select the section Delete kiosk button. Once you have done this, the kiosk will be removed from your Windows 11 computer.

Does Windows 10 have a Kiosk mode?

Windows Kiosk mode is supported for Windows 10 Pro (there is also Windows 11 Pro Kiosk mode), Enterprise and Education editions, and Windows 11. Kiosk mode is not available for Windows 10 Home devices.

However, there is a kiosk mode in Windows 11 Home. If you decide to upgrade, feel free to use our guide on how to download or upgrade to Windows 11 as a reference.

For more information on the differences between Windows 10 and 11, see our article on some of the features that were removed from Windows 11.

It is especially useful for locking down Windows 10 and 11 devices used for specific purposes. Such as self-check-in kiosks at airports, point-of-sale (POS) terminals at self-service restaurants, and digital signage used for advertising.

Moreover, it ensures that users cannot change device settings and access other features or apps on the device. Or use it for purposes other than those for which it was intended.

Fix browser security with artificial intelligence
If you had told me 30 years ago that the first web browser would be the ancestor of most software interfaces, I would have been skeptical. Of course, that was before most of us had any idea what the web would become. Even with this hindsight, it’s amazing how web browsers have become our primary windows to the digital world. Without mobile applications, this dominance would be almost absolute. And many apps use the same scripting languages that build modern websites.

The rise of the cloud and service era has cemented the ubiquity of the browser. It doesn’t matter what backend software or operating systems you deploy. Up front, users can launch any modern browser and interact with these systems. Rather than installing bespoke client software on each device, you simply direct users to a URL.

Browsers are the new operating systems – and while great for accessibility, this creates a huge security headache for people and organizations.

The flaws of our browsers

Historically, browsers represented confined spaces. What happened in the browser stayed in the browser and could not influence the rest of the system. This idea became obsolete as browsers evolved to become more versatile and relevant. Yet the spirit persists: it’s still easy to think of the browser as a confined space, not a highly integrated part of your digital experience.

To clarify, browser technology has not languished: today’s browsers are much more security conscious. But they face two big adversaries: highly motivated criminals and user errors. Browsers are improving, but the game is against them.

Going back to the days of dedicated software clients would be a step backwards for security and a giant leap backwards for technology. Browsers are universal and agnostic: they provide access to different interfaces such as dynamic websites, 3D (GrabCAD or Online 3D Viewer), or even virtual reality (the WebVR standard). Browsers even power modern development – using open languages such as HTML5 and Ruby on Rails, developers can make rapid changes and continuous improvements to interfaces.

Regressing to days before the browser became the operating system would also have huge cost implications. Imagine that Salesforce users around the world don’t access its services through browsers. Ditto for Amazon and Gmail. Apps have emerged as an alternative, but the world of digital software is a browser world. Around the world, millions of people access versions of Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop directly in a browser. We’ve come a long way from the need to install software for every service. Orphan browsers are a step backwards.

Be smart about browser security

There is a security cost to browser ubiquity. Browsers interact with sophisticated websites and use powerful extensions and plugins – headlines have often pointed to third-party software such as Flash and Java for security vulnerabilities. And browsers are present on many user devices. The way we work today – mixing personal and professional lives from remote locations across multiple devices – adds even more to the security threat landscape.

Browser security issues are linked to another trend in the cybersecurity market: the rapid marginalization of security perimeters. The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) wrote an article titled, Death of the perimeter: Zero Trust is (almost) here to staythat “we finally killed the idea of the perimeter as a viable defense metaphor”.

Cybercriminals have devised ways to circumvent security perimeters. Using extremely targeted and sophisticated spear phishing attacks, they trick users into giving them access. They mimic authentic communication (in a way undetectable to the human eye) but instead offer ways to breach systems without security being alerted. If you received an urgent email saying your bank account is in jeopardy, or an express delivery gone wrong, or an urgent request related to a collaboration platform you use, like LinkedIn or Slack, asking you to remedy by clicking on a link and confirming your login details, you come face to face with phishing. And, to emphasize, gone are the days when bad spelling, poorly pixelated company logos, and unbelievable claims from strangers asking for access to bank accounts made phishing attempts easy to spot. Today’s cybercriminals use far more sophisticated approaches that humans need intelligence and machine help to identify.

Browsers are often an integral part of phishing attacks – links in emails are displayed through a browser. Dangerous links are hard to contain. They emerge from legitimate infrastructures and places of trust. According to research by SlashNext70% of all phishing email URLs were hosted on legitimate cloud infrastructure, including AWS, Azure, outlook.com, and sharepoint.com.

It has become the main cybersecurity challenge for organizations. They need browsers to access software services. Access to the browser must be easy, otherwise it can affect productivity. Yet browsers must also be secured in ways that traditional perimeter security cannot provide.

The answer is to emulate human intuition with the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) – then strengthen it. These technologies excel at spotting abnormal behavior and reacting quickly in response. By using natural language and link-based detection, they can protect users against email phishing, mobile-based smishing (SMS phishing), browser-based spear-phishing (spear-phishing) and corporate email compromise (when criminals intercept corporate correspondence and insert malicious messages). information, such as different bank details).

By leveraging AI and ML, we can secure browsers and preemptively stop attacks that target users such as employees or customers. We also solve the conundrum of securing digital interactions in a world where the browser is our operating system. Rather than reinventing the software wheel, a little IT intelligence and vigilance can go a long way in solving the browser security paradox.
