Minecraft hits 1 trillion views on YouTube, the most popular game of all time on the platform

Minecraft is already one of the best-selling games ever made, along with Tetris, Mario, and Grand Theft Auto. Now he has taken a new step, counting more than 1 trillion views on Youtube.

The world-building game first appeared on Google’s video-sharing service in 2009, and has grown into one of the platform’s largest communities. There are more than 35,000 active creator channels making videos on Minecraft, YouTube said, in 150 countries. This is in addition to the 140 million people who play Minecraft on PCs, mobile devices, and video game consoles.

In an era when tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft are worth over $ 1,000 billion, that seems like just another number. But for Mojang Studios, the Stockholm-based development team that created Minecraft, it’s a reminder that the game has never stopped growing, even when many of us shift our attention to other things.

“It continues to increase,” said Lydia Winters, chief storyteller at Mojang Studios, who started her career making Minecraft videos on YouTube before being hired into a team of seven about ten years ago.

The appeal of gaming has grown steadily, even since Microsoft bought Mojang in 2014 for $ 2.5 billion. “Minecraft is more than a great games franchise – it’s an open global platform, driven by a vibrant community that is close to our hearts and full of new opportunities for this community and for Microsoft,” he told the then Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Microsoft and YouTube have said the game has grown steadily since then.

Part of Minecraft’s appeal is how its Lego block art style gives players tools to create their own worlds and tell their own stories. “From the start we let them play how they wanted,” said Winters. “There is no right or wrong way to play.”

Growth game

The success of Minecraft on YouTube has been the key to its growth. Little serious recalls that one of the first times he discovered Minecraft was when he was curator of viral videos and stumbled upon popular Minecraft clips. One of the most popular videos on the internet at the time was when someone recreated Star Trek’s Enterprise-D spaceship in Minecraft, racking up over 2 million views after downloading the clip in 2010.

“I don’t think you’ve ever appreciated how absolutely huge the Enterprise is,” videographer Halkun said in his 3:09 ship visit. The video racked up over 12.8 million views over the next 11 years.

“The game itself is actually a web,” said Pettie, who now leads the efforts at YouTube Culture and Trends Insights. He noted that the pandemic created another boost for gambling, as many people were stuck at home in search of entertainment. So they turned to social games that they could play with friends nearby or on the web, like Minecraft, a similarly designed competitor Roblox, and the hit fortnite online battle game. “Social bonding is a universal human need that people have,” said Pettie.

Not all of Mojang’s efforts have been as successful as his flagship game. Minecraft Dungeons, an action-adventure game in the style of Minecraft, received mixed reviews when it was released last year, according to a Metacritic poll. CNET’s cousin, GameSpot, gave the game a “good” review, noting that the biggest disappointment was that Minecraft Dungeons focused on fighting monsters, instead of offering a new twist on the formula of its namesake of world construction. “Rather than changing our expectations of what games can be, it is banking on its own popularity,” wrote Steve Watts of GameSpot.

Minecraft Earth attempted to turn the Minecraft formula into augmented reality, which overlays computer images on the real world. Hold your phone’s camera and Minecraft items are added to the screen. He noted that Minecraft continues to be one of the best-played and best-selling games each year in the industry, and he expects that to continue as more companies look to develop digital “metaverse“worlds in which people can socialize.

“With Minecraft,” he said, “you know what you’re going to get.”
