Tan wins another weekly C-USA honor
DALLAS – For the fourth consecutive tournament, the Mean Green women’s golf team has produced the USA conference golfer of the week as a senior Audrey Tan received the award, the league announced Wednesday, after an outstanding performance at MountainView Collegiate in Arizona. It is Tan’s second honor in as many tournaments.
Tan’s back-to-back nods come next Patricia Sinolungan received the award after winning the Tulane Classic and Emilie Ricaud earned the honor three weeks ago after an outstanding performance at the busy ICON Invitational.
The win marks Tan’s third honor this season along with the first comeback in the fall and fifth of the defending C-USA champion’s career.
“Audrey really stepped up last weekend against an extremely strong field,” the UNT head coach said. Michael Akers noted. “I’m very happy that C-USA recognizes her.”
Tan, from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, tied for third after shooting a 69-72-67-208 to finish 8 under – two strokes behind the winner. This field was filled with 10 top-50 teams, as well as No. 51 and 52. It also included 17 top-100 players, including Tan (97th). The only players to beat her were #40 (the winner) and #6. It was tied with No. 93. She beat #50, 23, 39, 44, 82, 91, 53, 88, 28, 90, 96, 78, 38. She led the team to an eighth-place finish, beating three top-50 teams. She finished tied for third in the field with 14 birdies, including seven in the final round and tied for second in the field in Par 5 scoring at 6 under.
“Audrey wasn’t doing too well heading into the final round and told me she wasn’t going to make any excuses and would do her best,” Akers said. “She came out and had seven birdies and had a 67. She was knocking down pins, which was great to see.”
Tan, who is now ranked 60th in the nation after the performance in Arizona, leads the team after seven events this season with an average of 71.76 and has the season-lowest round with a 66 at the Sam Golden Invitational. season opener. She has six runs in the 60s this season and four top-5s.
The Mean Green will be back in action on April 11-12, when they host The Bruzzy at Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth.
